Processing Steps
From Seed to Shelf
Sesame Seed Processing Steps
Step 1
Raw Material Procurement
- High-quality raw sesame seeds are sourced directly from farmers or trusted suppliers.
- Seeds are tested for purity, moisture, oil content, and contamination (dust, stones, or
broken seeds).
Step 2
Cleaning Process
Purpose: To remove impurities (dust, stones, sand, sticks, and foreign materials).
Equipment Used:
- Pre-cleaner / Vibratory cleaner: Removes large impurities (sticks, straw, leaves).
- Destoner: Separates stones and heavier impurities.
- Gravity separator: Removes light seeds and dust.
- Magnetic separator: Removes any metallic particles.
Output: Cleaned sesame seeds ready for hulling
Step 3
Hulling Process (Removing Outer Husk)
Purpose: To remove the outer hull (skin) of the sesame seed to produce hulled sesame seeds,
which are white and used in bakery, confectionery, and tahini.
Steps:
- Soaking:
- Seeds are soaked in warm water (sometimes with salt solution) to loosen the
hull.
- Seeds are soaked in warm water (sometimes with salt solution) to loosen the
- Dehulling:
- Using mechanical hullers or friction hullers to separate the seed coat.
- Separation:
- The mixture of hulled and unhulled seeds passes through centrifugal
separators to remove loosened hulls.
- The mixture of hulled and unhulled seeds passes through centrifugal
- Washing:
- Seeds are thoroughly washed to remove any remaining husk or impurities.
- Drying:
- Hulled seeds are dried using hot air dryers (to bring moisture below 6%).
- Controlled drying ensures seeds remain white and don’t burn.
Output: Clean, dry, hulled sesame seeds.
Step 4
Color Sorting & Grading
Purpose: To ensure uniform color and quality.
Steps:
- Optical color sorter machines detect and remove discolored or black seeds.
- Grading machine separates seeds based on size and weight (uniform appearance).
Output: Export-quality, uniformly white hulled sesame seeds.
Step 5
Quality Checking
Before packaging:
- Lab testing for purity, moisture, oil content, and microbiological safety.
- Random samples are tested according to international standards (ASTA, EU, FDA).
Step 6
Packaging Process
Purpose: To maintain freshness, prevent contamination, and prepare for export.
Packaging Materials:
- Bulk export: 25kg or 50kg PP woven bags with inner liners.
- Retail packs: 1kg, 5kg, or 10kg laminated pouches or vacuum packs.
- Food-grade material used to maintain hygiene.
Final Steps:
- Bags are weighed, sealed, and labeled with product name, batch number, country of
origin, and export details. - Palletized and shrink-wrapped for container loading.
Output: Ready-for-export sesame seeds meeting global food safety standards.
Step 7
Storage & Shipment
- Stored in clean, dry, pest-free warehouses.
- Temperature and humidity are controlled to prevent rancidity.
- Exported in FCL (Full Container Load) or LCL (Less than Container Load)
shipments depending on order size.
